Death of Father Hart
We are called upon to chronicle the death of one who was among the earliest settlers of Stephenson County. Mr. James Hart, the subject of this notice, was born in Ashe County, North Carolina, July 8th, 1808, and died at the residence of one of his sons in this city, March 25, 1880. Mr Hart came to this county in the fall of 1836, and in the following Spring, moved his family here. Here he has lived for more than forty years, having raised a large family, most of whom are now residents of this county; and two of whom are among the prominent business men of our city. Mr. Hart acquired such independence as usually comes from industry, economy, and honest toil. The old residents of Florence township will miss and mourn him, as well as the sons and daughters and grand children of his own family. He was respected by all who knew him, and possed many traits of character that all might well imitate, for they savored much of a self-sacrificing spirit and of that true life which comes from an honest heart and a noble manhood.
