Eli Thomas Phillips
December 1890 -
Eli Thomas Phillips died at his home in Aledo, Sunday Morning, December 7th, after a lingering illness of about two months. His remains were taken to Hamlet Tuesday morning and the funeral services held at the Presbyterian church in that village at 11:am and the interment then made in the Hamlet cemetery. Mr. Phillips' old pastor, Rev. H.W. Fisk, now of Peniel, conducted the funeral services. Mr. Phillips was born October 12, 1833 in Elkhart county, Indiana. He lived three years in Rock Island county and has resided for thirty-six years in Mercer county. He was married Sept. 7, 1856 to Miss Sarah E. Stark, who now survives him, as also two children, Mrs. William A. Van Meter and a son, O.N. Phillips, a daughter Laura died about two years ago. Mr. Phillips removed to Aledo in the spring of 1889 and this fall had bought him a comfortable home, having made up his mind to reside in Aledo permanently. He was well-to-do financially, was a good citizen and neighbor and a kind friend and will be missed by many. But the loss to family and friends will be his eternal gain, for he has gone to be with Christ, which is far better than to remain longer here on earth.
