Marion S. POLAND, b. 6 April 1868, Duncan Twp, Mercer, IL. to Joseph and Susan Deeds POLAND. [He was born "Marion Poland", but after his marriage to Nina WILLIAMS she suggested that as a Joy businessman, he ought to have a middle initial. (Later, it turned out that he had a nephew who was "Marion Ray Poland" from Keithsburg who was a bootlegger. This was very embarrassing to the family and Nina wanted to make a very real distinction between the two men.) Marion only attended the schools in or near Mannon for about four years when he had to leave school to work to help out in his very large family of origin.

He married first a young woman, Maggie MILLS. She had twin children, a daughter Eva and a son Evan. Maggie died as well as Evan soon after the birth of the twins. They are buried in Peniel Cemetery. Next he married Evaline McINTYRE from Muscatine, Iowa. She died right after the birth of her son Clair. She is buried in Peniel Cemetery.

When the child was three years old, Marion married Nina Beatrice WILLIAMS from New Boston, Mercer, IL. 14 May 1897. She is the daughter of Charlotte Swartout WILLIAMSof New Boston, IL. Nina raised Clair and together they had four children, Ruby, Ramona, Maurice and Darlene.

A letter from "The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted

Masons of the State of Illinois," May 18, 1998:

"Brother Poland for whom we have no birth date on file has a listed occupation of Merchant. He was elected to New Boston Lodge Mo. 59, New Boston, Illinois on September 17, 1904 and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on January 28, 1905. On June 24, 1911 your grandfather demitted from New Boston Lodge No. 59 and then proceeded to help charter a new lodge, hence forth came Joy Lodge No. 946. Brother Poland was a Master Mason in Good Standing with this lodge until his suspension March 8, 1928 for non payment of dues. "
