(Lottie) Darlene POLAND B. 20 August 1912. (According to County records, she was born on the 15th, but the family insisted that she was born on the 20th and that the doctor had recorded the birth incorrectly.) Joy, Millersburg Twp, Mercer, IL. After being graduated from Joy High School in 1931, she attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. She taught school in the country out of New Boston one year, boarding at the homes of people whose children were in the school; and at the Prouty school near Joy for one year. She married Ralph Oris Gustafson on 8 June 1935 in Dwight, Il. They lived in Kewanee, Henry, IL where they had three children, Cheryl, Aurel Jean and Larry.
In 1943, they moved to Ottawa, IL. In 1949, she returned to DeKalb College to finish her Home Economics degree. She taught in the Illinois school system for a total of twenty-five years, retiring at age 62 with an Illinois School employees pension. She lived in or near Riverside, IL for the last twenty-three years of her life. After her death on 27 October 1992, at her request, she was cremated, and her ashes were taken, by her children, to Colorado Springs where they were mixed with the dirt on her husband's grave.
