Introduction

Vermillion County was formed February 1, 1824. It was named for the southbound Vermilion River, which flows nearby. The extra "l" in its name distinguishes it from the adjacent Vermilion County, Illinois. This is one of few cases in the United States in which a county borders its namesake in an adjacent state.  Adjacent counties Warren County, Fountain CountyParke County, Vigo County,
Edgar County, Illinois, and Vermilion County, Illinois. Click on any of the county links to visit the USGW county web sites.

How the INGenWeb Started

In June, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Indiana Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Indiana, where collected databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more that one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, some volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page.
